North Carolina Vital Records are not free, searchable public records per NC laws and rules. Certificate records are not available through a search of this public website. See the Order a Certificate page to begin the process to obtain a certificate.

• Check our processing dates page to determine if estimated timeframes meet your needs.
  • If not, consider ordering a birth, death or marriage certificate from the Register of Deeds in the county of the event.
  • Divorce certificates may also be obtained from the Clerk of Court in the county where the divorce is filed.

      What We Do

      NC Vital Records is part of the NCDHHS, Division of Public Health, and is located in Raleigh. In partnership with county registers of deeds offices, local health departments, and birthing facilities throughout the state, we are responsible for recording North Carolina vital events. This includes responsibility for:

      • legally registering all births, deaths, fetal deaths, marriages, and divorces which occur in North Carolina
      • coding vital events for statistical purposes
      • maintaining vital records
      • and providing certified or uncertified copies to individuals, researchers, and public health programs.

        • The last available appointment is 2:30 p.m. Appointments are 30 minutes.
        • The 2:30 p.m. cut-off for walk-in appointments is necessary to meet daily processing deadlines.
